The diel carbon cycle of the Biosphere 2 ocean
نویسنده
چکیده
The purpose of this study was to find the dominant processes affecting the diel carbon cycle of the Biosphere 2 ocean from July 27, 1995 to August 14, 1995. Despite excessively low nitrate (B0.05 mmol l) and phosphate (0.00–0.04 mmol l) values, the Biosphere 2 ocean not only showed large daily TCO2 changes of 30.597.0 mmol kg but also a net production of organic carbon and CaCO3 during the period of this study. A model used to predict pCO2 values based on measured O2 concentrations suggested CaCO3 precipitation and organic carbon production were dominating the average diel ocean pCO2 signal while the gas exchange with the atmosphere was relatively insignificant to the pCO2 in the Biosphere 2 ocean. In the first 4 days of the experiment, the alkalinity decreased at a calculated rate of about 10 meq kg d while in the following 10 days the model indicated that the alkalinity was nearly constant. The model also confirmed that the positive net production of organic carbon effectively held the pCO2 in the Biosphere 2 ocean below equilibrium with the atmosphere. Although changes in the gas exchange had a small effect on the diel amplitude of pCO2 (255984 matm), changes in the photosynthetic quotient (PQ) were more significant. A PQ of 1.0 was used in the model to match calculated pCO2 with measured pCO2 of the Biosphere 2 ocean. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Causes and timing of future biosphere extinctions
We present a minimal model for the global carbon cycle of the Earth containing the reservoirs mantle, ocean floor, continental crust, biosphere, and the kerogen, as well as the combined ocean and atmosphere reservoir. The model is specified by introducing three different types of biosphere: procaryotes, eucaryotes, and complex multicellular life. During the entire existence of the biosphere pro...

We present a minimal model for the global carbon cycle of the Earth containing the reservoirs mantle, ocean floor, continental crust, biosphere, and the kerogen, as well as the aggregated reservoir ocean and atmosphere. The model is specified by introducing three different types of biosphere: procaryotes, eucaryotes, and complex 5 multicellular life. We find that from the Archaean to the future...
متن کاملCarbon Cycling and Biosequestration
Executive Summary O ne of the most daunting challenges facing science in the 21 st Century is to predict how Earth's ecosystems will respond to global climate change. The global carbon cycle plays a central role in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2) levels and thus Earth's climate, but our basic understanding of the myriad of tightly interlinked biological processes that drive the glo...
متن کاملEstimating the carbon transfer between the ocean, atmosphere and the terrestrial biosphere since the last glacial maximum
Carbon dioxide records from polar ice cores and marine ocean sediments indicate that the last glacial maximum (LGM) atmosphere C02 content was 80-90 pprn lower than the mid-Holocene. This represents a transfer of over 160 GtC into the atmosphere since the LGM. Palaeovegetation studies suggest that up to 1350 GtC was transferred from the oceans to the terrestrial biosphere at the end of the last...
متن کاملSensitivity of ocean acidification to geoengineered climate stabilization
[1] Climate engineering has been proposed as a possible response to anthropogenic climate change. While climate engineering may be able to stabilize temperatures, it is generally assumed that this will not prevent continued ocean acidification. However, due to the strong coupling between climate and the carbon cycle, climate engineering could indirectly affect ocean chemistry. We used a global ...
